KEYNOTE: Steve Ryan

Steve Ryan has guided the Mustangs to three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national titles and 13 Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships, recording the most football coaching victories and the highest victory rate in Morningside history. Ryan has made the Mustangs postseason regulars, reaching at least the semifinals 10 times. Ryan was inducted into the NAIA hall of fame following the 2022 season. Ryan is a four-time NAIA and American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. He earned his first such accolade in 2012 when the Mustangs went 13-1 and appeared in the national championship for the first time; his second occurred in 2018 as the Maroon rolled through an unbeaten campaign en route to the school’s first national title, his third was earned in 2019 following Morningside’s second successive unbeaten campaign and national championship, and his fourth was gained following an unbeaten 2021 and third national championship. He’s also a member of the AFCA’s Board of Directors. Ryan is an 11-time GPAC Coach of the Year, receiving the honor in 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. He received AFCA NAIA Region 4 Coach of the Year recognition in 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019,  2020, and 2021 and was the 2004 NAIA Football.net National Coach of the Year. Ryan’s Mustangs made their first appearance on the NAIA national stage in 2004 when they posted an 8-2 record, achieved a No. 12 national ranking, and secured their first-ever berth in the NAIA National Championship Series. Ryan is a 1989 graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois, where he was a four-year letter winner and a three-year starter as a linebacker. He received his master’s degree from National-Louis University in 1997. Steve and his six children: Madison, Kali, Kelsi, Jenna, Gabrielle, and William, reside in Sioux City.

Samuel Stanley

Having played football under Hall of Fame Coach, Mark Wortman, at Elkhorn High School, Stanley continued as a student assistant with the UNL Football program until he graduated in 2011. Beginning his career as Elkhorn South’s Defensive Coordinator, Stanley helped the team to back to back Class B state titles in 2015/2016. With a 34 game winning streak and a move to Class A, Stanley and Elkhorn South progressed successfully into the post season in 2018/2019. In 2020, Stanley was named Head Coach at Elkhorn North High School and spent the first two years building his new program from the ground up. Currently in his 3rd season as head coach, Stanley led the Elkhorn North Wolves to a 7-4 season and their first post season win in school history.

 

Chad Cattau

Activities Director and Football Coach

Starting as an assistant in 2000-2001, Cattau quickly rose to the position of Head Coach the following year. During his career at Cedar Catholic, he amassed a record of 141-77. He has led his team to 6 district championships and helmed 2 state final appearances with a third appearance that happened during his year as an assistant. In addition, he has been both a Head Coach and Assistant Coach in the Northeast Nebraska All Star Game. Going through the 2022 season, Coach Cattau’s team ended the regular season with a 9-3 record, and a fourth state championship game appearance.

Mark Mc Laughlin

A 2002 graduate of Elkhorn High School Mc Laughlin played for Coach Mark Wortman, one of the living legends of Nebraska High School Football.  Earning a Bachelor’s Degree in 2006 from UNK, Mc Laughlin also earned two Master’s degrees from UNK. Beginning as an assistant coach for Gibbon High School during the 2006 season, Mc Laughlin was named head coach at Gibbon in 2009 and served in that role through the 2018 season.  After 5 playoff berths and two district championships, Mc Laughlin applied to for the Head Coach position of Head Coach at Platteview in the winter of 2018. Accepting the head coach position in January of 2019, Mc Laughlin has been the head coach for the past 4 years.  Mark and his wife, Meredith, have two young sons: Brooks (10) and Harris (8).  “We love being a small piece of the Springfield community, and are thankful every day that our kids have the opportunity to see the great kids that come through our program.”

Ty Wisdom

Millard South High School
Omaha, NE

Coach Wisdom just finished up his 1st Season as the Millard South head football coach. He was previously a head coach in Arizona the last 6 years, at Horizon HS in Scottsdale, and Desert Vista High School in Ahwatukee. He has been a part of 4 Region/District Championships, 6 Playoff Appearances, and making the Inaugural Open Division in 2019. The open division in Arizona is ranked as the 6th toughest postseason bracket in the country. Coach Wisdom was named the Arizona HS Coach of the year in 2019.

In his first 5 years as Head Coach at Jenks High School, Keith Riggs and his staff have accumulated a record of 52-11. More impressive than his winning record is the fact that Coach Riggs has led his program to the State Championship game every single year.
